Scalp Micro-Pigmentation
What is SMP?
SMP, or Scalp Micropigmentation, is a procedure whereby a trained artist uses tattoo equipment to deposit small dots of ink mimicking trimmed/shaved hair follicles into the scalp, weaving together designated patterns to naturally mimic a low-cut head of hair and/or a hairline. Skilled technicians can also “densify” a thinning head of longer hair, utilizing the same principles.
FAQ
-
In a way, yes – the art of SMP is a very specific subset of tattooing specializing in the artist expertly placing small ink deposits into a surface layer of the scalp. This is done through the use of a tattooing machine, tattooing ink, and tattooing needles.
-
Done correctly, the results of a completed SMP procedure should last for about 3 to 7 years before requiring a touch-up. The time needed will vary depending upon lifestyle choices and genetics.
It can also be removed artificially via laser ink removal.
-
No, SMP is not regrowing your hair, nor replacing it via transplant. (Though it can be paired very well with the latter.)
SMP is the artistic end result of a uniquely skilled technician’s efforts in creating a natural looking mimicry (from afar and up close) of real hair follicles and hairlines, offering a hairline of a naturally shaved head, or a head sporting a fresh line-up.
It’s semi-permanent body art that instills a confident, restored hairline.

SMP is the best bang-for-your-buck hair loss treatment out there. A capable artist will ensure the best looking results, making SMP results the hair loss treatment with the highest success rate. Hair transplants and topical solutions (e.g.: Minoxidil, Fenasteride) are not guaranteed; even initial stellar results can be reversed with age.
They’re also much more expensive relative to SMP.
Most importantly, SMP doesn’t have crazy effects, and interestingly, can be paired with hair transplants to give the patient an even fuller look.

Verily, yes. However, most patients score it on the lower side of a pain index. It is a bearable discomfort for most.
That said, if at any point you feel excessive pain we highly encourage you to immediately share so as to allow for a break. Additionally, if the practitioner sees swelling or excessive redness they’ll break on their own, even reserving the right to cease activities for the day in the client’s best interest.
The ink deposits are also only in the upper dermis layer of the skin (just below the epidermis), which is relatively shallow compared to most traditional tattoos. The dots are also deposited rather quickly, with the needle being in the skin for just a moment. In-and-out. Clean.

Depending upon the area being covered, it could be anywhere from two to three sessions, that’re roughly each 4-6 hours long. Sessions are split about a month apart.
